Suggestion: Greasyspoon

Postby sebastian » 26 Mar 2012 04:04

I have a suggestion:

Dump HAVP and Privoxy completely.
Then add GreasySpoon to the package which is a ICAP compatible proxy that is more powerful than Privoxy.

Thank you for your suggestion!
Now, as I've seen the page, I can remember that I already stumbled across the page.

The problem is, we have no java and no ruby support on IPCop (and I don't like to have java on a Firewall ;)

Ruby is what I can see, not required for it to work, you just can't write GreasySpoon scripts in Ruby.
I think it supports perl too, in addition to Java/Javascript support.

But JRE is not dangerous to have installed on a firewall. You could have a nifty enable/disable feature, that XOR's the JRE executeable with a specific character upon enabling/disabling, in this way, you gurantee that the JRE can not be used for malicious purposes while disabled.

So JRE is only enabled while GreasySpoon is enabled, and the end user (firewall administator) can itself judge if its a good idea to have java enabled on the firewall, and then based on this decide if GreasySpoon should be enabled or disabled.
